A major figure in the history of bass strings, Rotosound Swing Bass 66s were the first roundwounds ever- introduced to the world in 1962. Dozens of renowned bass players were with Rotosound from the beginning and embraced the “new” roundwound sound- Chris Squire, Jaco, John Entwistle, Noel Redding, Geddy Lee, and Dave Pybus among others. Classic recordings featuring 66s include Live at Leeds - The Who, 2112 – Rush, Fragile – Yes.
66s are available in both stainless steel and nickel – the nickel is the blue box and stainless steel the orange. The differences are what you would expect, the nickel being a bit more mellow and softer feeling. With either wrapping, these strings have a bright, clear tone and a good balance of low / high frequencies and fundamentals. Many users are die-hard Swing 66 users. One thing worth noting is a consensus that these strings have a certain character and extra brightness on first use, that changes/mellows fairly quickly. Of course, many fans of this string love the “broken in” sound more than anything else as well. Daddario ProSteels may be the way to go if you want a very bright, new stainless steel sound to last longer.
If you do some researching and hear about a problem with these strings sometimes arriving dead in the packaging, this is an issue that has been resolved with Rotosound – and users report their customer service being excellent in terms of replacing strings free of charge, etc.
